Deepa had a heavy day at school with back-to-back classes, sports, and tests. The sun had been relentless, and by the time she reached the gate of her house, she felt drained. But the real weight was waiting for her inside. Her parents were arguing again. She could hear them from the gate. She could see two shadows pacing back and forth in the hall.
Her fists clenched. Her feet froze. Her chest tightened. Without thinking, she turned and ran. She ran past streets she usually avoided. She kept running…and running. She leapt through potholes, over stones, and let her tears accompany each step. The sun dipped below the horizon, and darkness crept in. Her breath came in short gasps. Her thoughts raced: Why do they always fight? Why can’t people just be happy!? Why can’t things stop hurting? All these thoughts clouded her head.
Her legs carried her to the end of a street she was always afraid to walk on. A forbidden place. The cave. Darkness slowly swallowed the entrance. Deepa kept running. Suddenly, Deepa realized where she was. A shiver ran down her spine. Her palms felt clammy. She could hear croaks and faint hissing sounds lingering in the space.
*ribbit ribbit* *ribbit ribbit*

Trembling, she froze, unsure whether to move forward or retreat.
Then she remembered. She has a pen drive in her bag. It has a tiny light attached. Her hands fumbled in her bag. She found something that felt like the shape of a pen drive and clicked it on. Deepa removed it and immediately pointed it outwards. A faint green beam pierced the darkness, revealing the rough rock walls in thin streaks of light and casting shadows that danced behind her.
“Who is it?” a voice boomed from the far end. Deepa startled.
“I… it’s… me… Deepa,” she whispered.
“Oh, haha! It’s you, Deepa! It’s me, Tam! I live at the deep end of this cave. It’s been so long!”
“T…Tam…You’re real?! I thought you were just my imagination!”
“Everything is real, Deepa…if you believe it,” Tam paused and then laughed loudly.
Deepa was still scared, but now she was curious about something else. She noticed the faint light reflecting off patches of mineral on the walls, creating tiny sparks in the darkness.
Tam interrupted her. “Oh, you are thinking about these sparks right?” “See how light bounces off surfaces.”
Deepa moved carefully, one step at a time. Her fingers brushed the rough rock, her feet tried to balance on the uneven ground, and her chest rose and fell with steady breaths. Every time she moved, the shadows seemed to dance funnily. Deepa looked at them and laughed, forgetting that she was scared. Deepa leaned a bit on the wall of the cave. She crouched, moved the pen light in different ways, creating patterns of light and dark figures. She discovered corners and passages of the cave that she couldn’t see before.
Tam laughed and said, “Haha, it is always a delight to see this!”
“Try this,” Tam said, throwing a small crystal towards her. Deepa lifted the crystal and aimed the light through it. Rainbows appeared on the ceiling, shifting as she moved the crystal.
Tam explained, “One night, I was sitting here quietly, bored. Someone had dumped a flickering torch in this cave, and I simply picked it up and pointed it through a stone. I found that it created a variety of colors.”
Deepa gasped. “It’s beautiful… like the cave is alive!”
“Exactly,” Tam said.
They explored further. Tam showed her shallow puddles where the light skimmed the water, bouncing in unexpected directions. Deepa felt the vibrations through her fingertips, the coolness against her skin, and the gentle pressure of water under her hands. Every reflection, every shadow, every flicker of light seemed like a clue to the cave’s hidden paths.
Deepa smiled, a thrill running through her. Her anger and fear had been taken over by curiosity. The cave was no longer threatening.
Finally, the cave opened into a chamber where the walls and ceiling reflected the green light in a dazzling array of patterns. Shadows leapt and twisted as they moved, each step revealing something new. Deepa tilted the pen light slowly, watching the reflections create pathways she could follow. She felt her heartbeat slow, replaced with wonder.
Tam smiled beside her. “See? Every shadow, every reflection is a story. It is magic, but it is also real!”
Deepa nodded. She had come into the cave running from anger, fear, sadness, and confusion. Now she realized she had discovered something far greater. And with Tam beside her, guiding and laughing, she knew she would never forget this journey. The day she followed the darkness and found light!
As she stepped out of the cave, the last green glimmer fading behind her, Deepa paused. She looked back at the dark mouth of the cave and wondered: had it all really happened, or was it a dream her imagination had painted? The line between reality and imagination blurred, but it didn’t matter. She could still feel it…all of it…inside her.
WHERE’S THE SCIENCE? Click to find out.
Through Deepa’s adventure in the cave, we experienced light, shadow, reflection, and perception. Her body and senses were her tools, guiding her steps, measuring distance, and discovering hidden paths. Every movement, hesitation, and adjustment revealed a scientific principle in action.
- Reflection of Light – Deepa’s pen light bounced off cave walls and puddles, showing her surfaces and shapes she couldn’t see directly.
- Refraction – Light passing through the crystal split into colors, creating rainbows. This shows how light bends when it moves through transparent materials.
- Shadows and Perception – Shadows changed as Deepa moved, helping her sense space and distance in the dark.
- Balance and Body Awareness – Moving through uneven ground required careful coordination of her legs, arms, and posture to avoid falling.
- Sensory Integration – Touch, sight, hearing, and movement worked together, allowing her to navigate obstacles and understand the cave’s layout.
